Hannah Moscovitch is a Canadian playwright. She grew up in Ottawa, Ontario, with her father, a university professor, and her mother, a labour researcher. Her father, Allan Moscovitch, is Jewish and of Romanian/Ukrainian descent, which are features of many characters in Moscovitch’s work. Moscovitch is a graduate of the National Theatre School, where she studied acting.
Moscovitch’s first major success came in 2007 with her play East of Berlin, a play about the legacy of the children involved in the Holocaust. Her next large success was in 2012 with the play This is War, a story of Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan. Some of her other major works include The Russian Play (2006), In This World (2009) and What a Young Wife Ought to Know (2015). In 2016, Moscovtich premiered Bunny (2016), a commissioned piece by the Stratford Festival about female sexuality and The Secret Life of Mothers (2018), which is an autobiographical piece about motherhood. One of Moscovitch’s largest works is Old Stock: a Refugee Love Story (2017), which was written in collaboration with her husband, Christian Barry, and klezmer-folk musician Ben Caplan. This show tells the story of Hannah’s great-grandparents and their immigration to Canada.
Moscovitch is also a writer for film and television. She is the winner of several Dora Mavor Moore awards and is the first Canadian woman to win the Windham-Campbell Literature Prize for Drama. Moscovitch is currently the playwright-in-residence at Tarragon Theatre company in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
