Plot

Act One

We begin with a surprise entrance—Willy Wonka himself steps forward. He’s the world’s most famous candy maker and the mind behind marvels like the Everlasting Gobstopper. But now, he feels forgotten. So, he disguises himself as an ordinary candy shop owner and meets a bright young boy named Charlie Bucket, who is absolutely fascinated by Wonka and his inventions.

In the musical number “The Candy Man,� Wonka introduces the magic of sweets and sets the tone for the whimsical world to come.

Charlie lives with his hardworking mother and four quirky grandparents—all sharing one bed! Though money is tight and Charlie doesn’t even expect his usual birthday chocolate bar, he still dreams big. He and his Grandpa Joe share a special bond (“Charlie, You and I�) and imagination becomes their escape from the hardships of daily life.

Inspired, Charlie writes to Willy Wonka in “A Letter from Charlie Bucket,� expressing his admiration and even offering a few candy ideas of his own.
