Text

NELLIE:
(Praying) Forgive me!

When they tried to get the needle in, I had a contraction and they had to stop.
Three times.

[CATHERINE holds her tablet, staring at it, as if bracing herself. She types, speaking with difficulty as she does so.

CATHERINE:
Contractions made it hard to find the heart. Scared they’d get the wrong baby. Will you call me please?! C x]

NELLIE continues praying.

I thought they’d give me something for the pain, but they didn’t.

I closed my eyes and prayed for the soul of baby B.

She looks up, pleadingly.

Dear God...What if you set out to do something good but had to do something bad to make that happen?

What if you commit a terrible sin...but for a wonderful reason?
