Introduction

Born in 1973, Savion Glover is the youngest of three sons and was raised in a single-parent household after his father left the family. Growing up in Newark, NJ, his mother, Yvette, was a gospel and jazz singer. His grandfather was a big band pianist and vocalist, while his grandmother was the minister of music at New Hope Baptist Church in Newark. His grandmother noticed and encouraged Glover’s musical talents and he began performing as a child. Glover is currently married with a teenage son.

  • 1982 - Glover enrolls at New York’s Broadway Dance Center.
  • 1984 - Glover makes his Broadway debut as the title character in The Tap Dance Kid.
  • 1989 - Glover stars in the movie Tap.
  • 1989 - Glover appears in the Broadway musical Black and Blue.
  • 1990 - Glover makes his choreography debut at the Apollo Theater’s Rat-A-Tat-Tap Festival in New York City.
  • 1991 - Glover graduates from Newark High School.
  • 1992 - Glover appears in the Broadway musical Jelly’s Last Jam.
  • 1995 - Glover choreographs and stars in musical revue Bring in ’da Noise, Bring in ’da Funk.
  • 2000 - Glover publishes his autobiography, Savion! My Life in Tap.
  • 2006 - Glover co-choreographs the computer animated film Happy Feet.
  • 2016 - Glover choreographs Shuffle Along, or, the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed.
