
William Henry Alexander Brown
Introduction
William Henry Alexander Brown (sometimes referred to as William Alexander Brown or William Henry Brown) is considered to be the first known black playwright in America. Born in the West Indies, Brown was born “free� and worked as a steward on a Liverpool liner. When he retired from sailing, Brown purchased a house in New York City. At his home, he created the African Grove Theatre, the first all-Black theatre company in America. William Henry Alexander Brown continued to produce plays with his company until 1824. Brown died in 1884.

- 1821 - The African Grove Theatre is closed down by officials.
- 1823 - Brown writes The Drama of King Shotaway.
- 1824 - The last known performance of the African Company.
- 1988 - Carlyle Brown writes The African Company Presents Richard III.
Context & Analysis
Education & Influences
Unfortunately, because there is so little known about Brown’s early life, his training and influences are a mystery. There is no doubt that he was inspired by classical literature, especially Shakespeare, as his works made up a significant portion of Brown’s repertoire.
