Introduction
Arlene Phillips was born in Prestwich, Lancashire and has one brother and one sister. She lost her mother to leukemia when Philips was just 15. Philips moved to London in her mid-teens and quickly established herself in the city’s vibrant dance scene. Her first marriage, to fashion designer Danny Noble, ended after seven years. Aged 36, Philips became a single mother to her daughter, Alana. She has been in a relationship with Angus Ion, a set builder, since 1985. The couple met on the set of the music video for the Freddie Mercury song "I Was Born to Love You". They have one daughter, Abi, born when Philips was 47.

- 1974 - Phillips forms the dance troupe, Hot Gossip.
- 1978 - Hot Gossip backs Sarah Brightman on her hit single "I Lost My Heart to a Starship Trooper".
- 1982 - Phillips provides choreography for the film adaptation of Annie.
- 1987 - Phillips is nominated for a Tony Award for her work on Starlight Express.
- 1993 - Phillips is nominated for an Olivier Award for her work on the West End revival of Grease.
- 1998 - Phllips is nominated for an Olivier Award for her work on the West End premiere of Saturday Night Fever.
- 2004 - Phillips becomes one of the inaugural judges on Strictly Come Dancing.
- 2021 - Phillips becomes Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE).
- 2023 - Phillips is awarded the Special Recognition Olivier award alongside Derek Jacobi.
- 2024 - Phillips wins her first Olivier Award for her work on Guys and Dolls.

As a child, Arlene Phillips attended Broughton Preparatory School, Cheetham Hill, Manchester and Beaver Road Primary School, Didsbury. After passing the 11 plus exam, she then attended Manchester Central High School for Girls. She left formal education aged 16.
