Introduction

Arlene Phillips was born in Prestwich, Lancashire and has one brother and one sister. She lost her mother to leukemia when Philips was just 15. Philips moved to London in her mid-teens and quickly established herself in the city’s vibrant dance scene. Her first marriage, to fashion designer Danny Noble, ended after seven years. Aged 36, Philips became a single mother to her daughter, Alana. She has been in a relationship with Angus Ion, a set builder, since 1985. The couple met on the set of the music video for the Freddie Mercury song "I Was Born to Love You". They have one daughter, Abi, born when Philips was 47.

  • 2023 - Phillips is awarded the Special Recognition Olivier award alongside Derek Jacobi.
  • 2024 - Phillips wins her first Olivier Award for her work on Guys and Dolls.
